Friday Night Funkin is the indie rhythm game phenomenon. Born in 2020 on Newgrounds, originally developed for a game jam by a team of four people, the game went viral within weeks and now counts tens of millions of players worldwide. On LemonArcade, you can play it for free from any browser, no download, no account required.

This guide covers everything: the basics, the controls, the weeks, tips for beating Hard Mode, and the best mods to know about.

What is Friday Night Funkin?

Friday Night Funkin (often abbreviated FNF) is a rhythm game in which you play as Boyfriend, a young blue-haired rapper who must win musical rap battles to win the heart of his girlfriend Girlfriend. The catch: her father, his enemies, and all sorts of shady characters are trying to stop you.

The gameplay is simple: arrows appear on screen and you press the corresponding key at the right moment. The more precise you are, the higher your health bar climbs. Miss too many notes and the bar drops — you lose.

The game is developed by ninjamuffin99, PhantomArcade, evilsk8r and Kawai Sprite. It is available as open source on GitHub, which has allowed a community of modders to create hundreds of extensions and additional weeks.

Controls

The default controls are the arrow keys on your keyboard:

You can also use WASD if you prefer:

The Enter key confirms menus. Escape pauses or goes back. Both configurations work perfectly on Chromebook and school PCs.

The three difficulty levels

FNF offers three difficulties accessible before each song.

Easy: arrows arrive less frequently and less often. Ideal for learning the patterns of a new song or for complete beginners. Don't skip this difficulty — even skilled players use it to discover new tracks.

Normal: the balanced difficulty, the one most players use. Patterns are complete but at a manageable speed.

Hard: speed increases significantly and patterns are denser. Some songs on Hard Mode are brutally difficult, even for experienced players.

The base game weeks

The base game (without mods) contains 7 weeks, each with 2 to 3 songs and a different opponent.

Week 1 — Daddy Dearest: you face Girlfriend's father. Three songs: Bopeebo, Fresh, Dadbattle. This is the game's natural tutorial — absolutely start here.

Week 2 — Spooky Month: two skeleton characters, Skid and Pump. Songs: Spookeez, South. Halloween vibes, excellent soundtrack.

Week 3 — Pico: you face Pico, an iconic Newgrounds character. Songs: Pico, Philly, Blammed. Difficulty rises noticeably as patterns get faster.

Week 4 — Mommy Must Murder: Girlfriend's mother, a professional singer. Songs: Satin Panties, High, MILF. This week marks a real jump in difficulty.

Week 5 — Red Snow: Christmas vibes in a shopping mall. Songs: Cocoa, Eggnog, Winter Horrorland. Winter Horrorland is one of the hardest songs in the base game.

Week 6 — Senpai: a pixel art world with Japanese visual novel vibes. Songs: Senpai, Roses, Thorns. Thorns is considered the hardest song in the original game.

Week 7 — Tankman: the iconic Newgrounds character. Songs: Ugh, Guns, Stress. Stress is the final song and it is formidable.

Tip 1: play Easy first to learn the patterns

Even if you consider yourself a good player, play each new song on Easy once or twice before moving to Normal or Hard. The patterns on Easy are simplified but they give you the rhythmic structure of the song. You will be much more comfortable when you step up to the higher difficulty.

Tip 2: listen to the music, don't just watch the arrows

FNF is a rhythm game, not a pure reflex game. The arrows arrive in time with the music. If you listen carefully, you can anticipate notes before they even appear on screen. The best FNF players play as much by ear as by sight.

Tip 3: don't panic on long rapid sequences

When a rapid series of notes arrives, the instinct is to want to hit everything as fast as possible. That's a mistake. Stay in the rhythm, hit consistently. A slightly late press that's still in tempo is better than frantic, out-of-sync button mashing.

Tip 4: use pause strategically

You can pause at any moment with Escape. On very long or very difficult songs, don't hesitate to take a short pause if you feel your focus slipping. Five seconds of pause is better than a defeat at 90% of the song.

Tip 5: for Hard Mode, memorize the patterns

Beyond a certain difficulty level, pure reaction speed is no longer enough. The best FNF players know the patterns by heart. This muscle memory is built by replaying the same songs multiple times.

The best FNF mods to know

One of FNF's greatest strengths is its modding community. Hundreds of mods add new weeks, new characters and new songs. Here are the most well-known:

Most mods are downloadable on GameBanana, which is the main hub of the FNF community.
