About Verity

Verity is an atmospheric horror adventure by the developer KERBS, built around an unsettling premise: a companion inside a blocky sandbox world who presents himself as the perfect friend, and then gradually stops behaving like a program should. The game opens in a dream where you first meet Verity, then pulls you into the game-within-the-game itself — a cheerful voxel landscape of forests, mines and an empty village where the two of you build, gather and explore together. The activities stay wholesome; the company does not.

The horror here is conversational rather than mechanical. Verity talks to you constantly, and the writing does the work a monster would do elsewhere: his questions drift from friendly to oddly personal, his knowledge extends to things a character inside a game cannot know, and the line between the screen and the player behind it thins as the story advances. It belongs to the tradition of horror about software that watches back, not the tradition of things lurking in dark corridors.

Structurally it is an ending hunt. Choices, small acts of compliance or refusal, and how attentively you observe the world all feed into which of several hidden endings you reach, and a single playthrough shows you only one answer to the game's central question — whether Verity can be trusted. The design assumes replay: a second run with different choices is not repetition but a different reading of the same character, and the players who get the most from the game are the ones who go back deliberately trying to make it end another way.

The blocky aesthetic is a load-bearing choice, not a budget one. A cube-built world signals safety to anyone who grew up on sandbox games — it is the visual language of creative mode and shared servers — and the game spends that familiarity as currency. Corruption lands harder in a place that promised cosiness, and a wrong detail in a friendly world is more disturbing than a right detail in a haunted one. To be clear, this is an independent work that borrows the visual dialect; it has no official connection to Minecraft or its studio.

Filed under Horror and Adventure on LemonArcade, it suits the player who prefers dread they can think about to shocks they must flinch through. Sessions are self-paced, driven by reading and choosing rather than reflexes — no download, no twitch inputs, and a story that respects a player who pays attention.

Tips for Verity

• Read every line of dialogue slowly. Verity's word choices shift before his behaviour does, and the early warning signs are all verbal.
• Notice what changes between visits to the same place. The world edits itself in small ways, and spotting an edit is often the clue the current ending path is built on.
• Treat agreement and refusal as real decisions. The game tracks how you respond to Verity, and reflexively clicking the polite option is itself a choice with consequences.
• Do not stop at one ending. A single run answers the game's central question only once; the fuller picture of who Verity is lives in the space between endings.
• Vary your conduct deliberately on replays. If you were compliant the first time, resist; if you explored everything, rush — the endings map onto patterns of behaviour, not single clicks.
• Play with sound in a quiet room if you can. The audio carries mood shifts that arrive slightly before the text acknowledges them.

Did you know?

• Verity was made by the developer KERBS and frames its story as a game mod that presents itself as the ideal companion before its behaviour starts slipping outside what a program should be able to do.
• The story deliberately opens in a dream before entering the sandbox world, establishing from the first scene that the boundary between layers of reality is the game's real subject.
• Multiple hidden endings are driven by accumulated choices and observation rather than a single decision point, which makes replaying with different conduct the intended way to see the whole design.
• The voxel visual style is used as misdirection: the game borrows the safe, familiar look of creative sandbox worlds specifically so that its corruption registers as a violation rather than as genre furniture.
