Basketball Stars is MadPuffers' contribution to a very specific tradition: the two-player sports game built for one keyboard. Two people, one screen, one set of keys split down the middle — a format that predates online multiplayer entirely and has never really been improved on for playing next to someone. Choose a team, enter the tournament, and settle it on a half-court.
It has by some distance the deepest control scheme of any sports game in this catalogue. Movement, shoot, steal, pump, block, a dash on a double-tap, and a dedicated super shot key. That is more than most browser sports games offer in total, and it is what separates a rally here from the simple shoot-and-hope loop of casual football games. The dash in particular — double-tap a direction — is the input most players never discover, and it is the difference between defending a shot and watching one.
The supershot bar is the mechanic that shapes matches. It fills as you play, and once full it lets you trigger an unstoppable dunk from anywhere on the court. That single rule turns every possession into a resource decision: spend the bar now on a shot you would probably make anyway, or hold it for a moment when you are behind and out of position. Good players are usually the ones with a plan for it rather than the ones who fire it the instant it lights up.
Its four categories — Multiplayer, Sports, Arcade and 2 Players — are all doing work, but 2 Players is the one that describes it best. This is at its best with a person beside you. It functions solo, but the format was designed around the argument, the rematch and the elbow, and a tournament played alone is a different and quieter game.
